What’s it mean when bartenders recommend you “call your ___”?

I’ve been on bartender websites where they say “I’d say develop a taste for Manhattans (call your whiskey/bourbon!)” and “Start your journey with scotch start ordering a Rusty Nail (scotch and Drambuie; and call out your scotch!)”

What does “call your [drink]” mean? Is it like be specific or give a brand name of the scotch, vodka, whiskey, etc?

A call drink is when you specifically name the brand of alcohol you want in your drink. If not, the bartender is going to servce you whatever is their well liquor, usually the cheapest stuff they carry.

………..

I’ve never heard that, it makes sense though, but it seems kind of rude. I’d think you’d tell them when they asked for your order in the first place. I’ve heard of calling your tab.
