Technology helps Santa make magic, scientist says

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Ever wondered how Santa Claus can travel around the world in just one night on his reindeer-pulled sleigh and deliver toys to all the children?

“He exploits the space-time continuum,” says Larry Silverberg, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University.

Santa’s magic may go far beyond merely traveling across 200 million square miles (322 million sq km) to visit hundreds of millions of homes of believing children in just one night, Silverberg said.

“He understands that space stretches, he understands that you can stretch time, compress space and therefore he can, in a sense, actually have six Santa months to deliver the presents,” Silverberg told Reuters.

“In our reference frame it appears as though he does it in the wink of an eye and in fact there have been sightings of Santa, quick sightings, and that’s in our reference frame, but in Santa’s reference frame he really has six months”.

Silverberg said his research has established that Santa does not, as commonly thought, carry enough presents for each child in his sleigh. “How could he?” Silverberg asked.

“We believe that he uses nanotechnology to grow the presents under the tree and really, what he’s done, is he’s figured out how to turn what we call irreversible thermo-dynamic properties into reversible ones and so he really starts with soot, candy, other types of natural materials, he puts them under the tree and he actually grows them in a reverse process to create the presents, wrapping and all.”

And then there’s the age-old question that Santa has to address every year — who’s been naughty and who’s been nice?

“We believe, that there are large antennas miles long under the snow up at the north pole and we think the grid-spacing is in the order of millimeters so that you can receive radar-type signals,” Silverberg said.

Santa’s trip takes in all continents and all time zones. Silverberg says his sleigh is equipped with an onboard sleigh guidance system.

His reindeer, says Silverberg, are genetically bred to fly, balance on rooftops and see in the dark.

“It’s certainly a worthy thing to spend time on and it has all sorts of ramifications in everyday life,” Silverberg said.

Molding the artist in your child

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Children are becoming multi-talented these days and they are leaving no stone unturned to achieve and excel in whatever fields that is available to them. Do you see your kid drawing out indecipherable pictures of whatever it sees? Are you looking at shops or places where you can pick quality kids art supplies that will help mold the budding artist? You need to look for the right kind of easels and painting brushes that form a primary part of your child’s art supplies and you need to take special care to look at the height of the easels as this will be a contributing factor deciding the quality of the art form. There are a lot of places where these quality kids art supplies are found and these can purchased at good rates even over the internet. While parents purchase art supplies like easels, care has to be taken to ensure that they purchase the ones best suited to their children’s requirements. These art supplies should augment and enhance the skills of the little ones and prove to be handy for these budding artists to bring to limelight the talents that God has blessed them with and the same that their parents have passionately allowed them to pursue.

My 3 year old wakes up too early….?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

….and comes into our room to wake up my wife and I. Then everyone is cranky and in a bad mood.

keep your bedroom door shut and refuse to respond until it’s time to get up. your child will soon come to understand that you won’t get up and pay any attention until you’re ready to.

as well as this, keep the child up a little later at night or cut out any sleeps during the day for a little while. this will mean that the child is more tired and therefore less likely to wake early.

my mum is naturally a late sleeper and my sisters are both early risers. from when we were about three or four, mum used to leave out a bowl of cereal and a jug of frozen milk at night. by morning, the milk would have thawed but not soured, so we could get our own breakfast from it if we wanted. that meant that not only did we have something to do, we’d already got breakfast out the way by the time mum got up, so that was one part of the morning routine already over with. This will help particularly if your child is waking because he/she is hungry.

Teens going to high school which is better band or choir

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

It depends on the teen’s interest, quality of the programs available, schedule-if it fits the family and the teen’s schedule, the teacher’s style, if there is any friend in the same activity, etc.
If possible, try both in the beginning and see which one is a better fit.

Can 2 colored eye parents have a black/brown eyed kid?

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Lets say the parents have one blue/green, or green/green, or blue/blue is it possible for one of their kids to have a black or brown eyed kid?

I’m not sure about green. But if both parents have blues eyes, there’s no way their child can have brown eyes. That’s because blue-eyed people don’t have any brown-eyed genes to pass down. If they did, they’re eyes would be brown, not blue.

Here’s how it works. We all have two genes for eye color; one from our mother and one from our father.

If you get brown-eyed genes from both parents, your eyes will be brown. And since all you have is brown-eyed genes, that’s what you’ll pass down to your kids.

If you get a blue-eye gene from one parent, and a brown-eyed gene from the other parent, your eyes will be brown. That’s because brown is dominant; it “rules out” the blue gene. But you still have that blue-eyed gene in you; it just doesn’t show. And when you have kids, you might pass a blue-eyed gene to one, and a brown-eyed gene to another. It’s just luck of the draw. The kid who gets your brown-eyed gene will have brown eyes, no matter what they get from the other parent. The kid who gets your blue-eyed gene could have blue eyes, if they also get a blue-eyed gene from the other parent. But if the other parent gives them a brown, that will over-rule your blue-eyed gene, and the kid will have brown eyes.

If you have blue-eyed genes from both parents, your eyes will be blue. And since that’s all you have, that’s all you can pass down to your kids. So if your partner also has blue eyes, your kids have no choice but to have blue eyes as well.

——

Absolutely. Brown is the most dominant eye color for humans. As long as there is one person in either family tree with brown eyes, it can carry to generations.

When should my daughter start kindergarten?

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

She will be 5, August 5th. How do I know when she is ready for kindergarten? I have 2 older sons.. and she says she wants to go to school. I don’t know if it’s because they go or if she really wants to.

I would never hold a child back. So many people do it these days and I just don’t understand it.

My sons birthday is also in August. We sent him to kindergarten and now he is it third grade. The sad thing is his friend next door is the same age, they went to preschool together, and he is in second grade. He feels like he was left behind…and he was.

Children are at various developmental stages when they are 5, but, unless there is a serious development problem, they will all even out by third grade.

Don’t do this to your child. Give them the opportunity to move on with their life with other kids their age.

——–

If she has attended a daycare center of any kind, they should be able to tell you if she is ready (most likely she is). Also, our school district holds kindergarten screenings to kind of “test” kids on readiness for kindergarten — contact your local school district to see if they offer something similar. Most important, if she really shows interest, she is probably ready. Kindergarten is meant to be a transitional year; the teachers know the children will be at many levels to start. I wouldn’t worry. They will probably assess where the children are at early in the year and will tell you if there is something you can help them work on at home.

——–

Has she gone through the kindergarten screening? I think a lot of it depends on whether or not you think she will be ready to sit and complete her work, is ready to learn…because there is a lot that is expected of kindergarteners today. I gave my boys that extra year and it worked out great for them.

———-

Since she will be 5, she should go. Especially if she wants to. If you wait until next year, she will be older than everyone else in her grade.

Designer Maternity Fashion is Worth the Price Tag

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

When you become pregnant you may be surprised at how expensive designer maternity clothes can cost. Of course, when you buy designer maternity fashion you will look absolutely gorgeous and stylish. That is because designer maternity clothes use special fabrics and designs to really make you look good. But, you may be wondering if the price tag is really worth the clothes you are buying. Well, that really depends. In general, most women choose to spend the money on designer maternity clothes when it is for a special occasion. That includes a big business meeting, a wedding, cocktail party, or other big event. But, in general, women find that the price tag is a little too high for clothes they will only wear for a brief period of time. And, many women claim that they really can’t tell a big difference in designer maternity jeans and affordable maternity jeans. Of course, your budget will play a big role in how much you can afford to spend on maternity clothes. But, overall, you won’t want to spend too much simply because these are clothes that you will wear for a few short months and that is it!

How to plan my four year old’s party?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Arts and crafts are always fun. I used to work at a daycare with children of all ages, and no matter how old they were, they loved doing crafts. The girls could make bubble paper: all you need is dish soap, food coloring, straws, tin cake pans, and plain paper. Fill the pans about 1″ deep with water, add a few drops of soap and whatever colors you wish to use, then mix it up. Give each of the girls a straw and let them blow bubbles in the pan of colored water. Next, all they have to do is lay the paper on the bubbles. Once they have created the patterns and color combinations they like, just set them aside to dry. (Be sure to write their name on it so each girl gets the one she made.)

They could also make jewelry out of pasta. They can just paint the pasta (any pasta with a hole in it; like macaroni) then thread yarn through them when they dry.

You could have them make carmel popcorn balls or marshmellow squares to enjoy while they watch a movie, like Chicken Little.

They could also play games like simon says or mother may I. And of course, if they like stories, they could sit in a circle and one girl would start a story then “pass” it on to the next girl, and so on until all of the girls have contributed to creating an enitire story. (The daycare kids loved that one!)

Be creative and hang in there! You’ll do just fine!
