GPS Products

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I have been trying to choose a new GPS product. I know that the garmin 296 is a great one and it is what I have at the moment but I would really like to update. I have heard that the Garmin 396 is the only system that anyone would want. I was attracted to the fact that you can adapt it to use it in the car if you want to, which is a great feature and will save you having to buy an additional unit for the car. This will not only save you some money but save you having to work out how to use two different pieces of equipment which will save you a lot of time. The integrated weather display is really useful on the garmin as well and it could save you a lot of time and hassle while you are flying. Many people are raving about it and so I was almost tempted to just buy it but I am hunting around for the best price at the moment, hoping that I can find a company with a sale on so that I can save some money. I am always on the look out for a bargain!

“Guitar Hero” fails to save Activision

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

The economy is so bad that even the company behind “Guitar Hero,” the hottest video game franchise in the world, couldn’t muster a profit in the holiday quarter.

Activision Blizzard on Wednesday posted a $72 million net loss in the fourth quarter, compared with an $86 million profit last year. It was the first full quarter for the company since its merger with Vivendi’s game unit, so the comparison isn’t perfect.

Excluding deferred revenue and some charges, the company would have earned $429 million on net revenue of $1.64 billion. Those numbers beat Wall Street forecasts, but Activision Blizzard offered gloomy 2009 guidance, causing the stock to fall 4% in after-hours trading after rising 1% to $9.48 in the regular session.

Activision Blizzard predicted revenue this year of $4.7 billion, about $500 million shy of what analysts were estimating.

The recession, though, could provide acquisition opportunities in the near future, executives said on a conference call with analysts Wednesday. Video game stocks have been pummeled along with the rest of the market in the past six months: The biggest, Electronic Arts, is down 65%, and THQ is off 81%.

Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick noted that in 2008 “we had four of the top 10 best-selling games worldwide.”

With “Guitar Hero,” Activision Blizzard spawned the music genre for video games, which accounts for about 11% of the industry’s software sales.

Last year, “Guitar Hero” was the world’s biggest-selling franchise, and “Guitar Hero World Tour” was the best-selling video game globally over the Christmas holiday.

The company’s underwhelming guidance appeared to catch some experts by surprise, given the strength of its lineup this year.

Guitar Hero Metallica” will hit shelves this quarter, as will “Monsters vs. Aliens,” based on the 3-D movie from DreamWorks Animation.

Metallica has sold 100 million records worldwide and is set to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame next month. The new game features music from Metallica and 20 other bands chosen by them.

Later this year are games tied to the films “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and “Ice Age: The Meltdown.” There is also a “DJ” extension for “Guitar Hero” in the works as well as a greatest-hits version of the franchise due this year.

Tom Cruise, cast of ‘Valkyrie’ lightened up poking fun at Hitler on set

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

‘Top Gun’ star Tom Cruise along with the cast of the movie ‘Valkyrie’ have revealed that they lifted their mood on the set of the anti-Hitler film by abusing a bust of the Fuhrer.

“The more grim the tale, the more fun you have on the set, otherwise you go crazy,” the New York Daily News quoted Bill Nighy, who plays Gen. Friedrich Olbricht, as telling at the flick’s NYC premiere night.

“If you are in a Nazi uniform, you’re tempted to do stupid and disgusting things in it, to dishonour [Nazis] as much as you can.

“I would spit in his eye, and everybody would give him the middle finger and a few choice words as they walked by,” he stated.

Co-star Kenneth Branagh recounted an old English ditty the cast sang to lighten the mood.

“I shan’t repeat it, but it was based around the fact that Hitler only had one testicle,” Branagh added.

DiCaprio brands paparazzi ‘disrespectful and dangerous’

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio has vowed to stay away from the paparazzi and has branded them ” disrespectful and dangerous”.

The ‘Aviator’ actor admitted that he has been trying his level best to keep away from the paparazzi, since he became a major Hollywood phenomenon.

“Actually I’m not in the tabloids anymore. I am sometimes, but I’ve watched the culture change. I’m old hat. And I love it. You know what it is with me? This is something I’d like to clarify. I’ve heard people say, ‘Because you hide, it makes you seem ungrateful,” Contactmusic quoted DiCaprio, as saying.

The 34-year-old actor revealed that he is abhorrent of the fact that the paparazzi try to make a living by intruding into his private life.

“The mere fact that these - I’ll use the word piles - are earning money from exploiting my image is the only reason I hide myself or am not a photo-friendly person. I do not like the way they conduct themselves. I think they’re disrespectful and dangerous.

“The reason I don’t pose or smile or that I seem mad is that I don’t want them to make a living off my private life,” he added.

Shaq becomes “The Big Tweet” with Internet move

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Shaquille O’Neal has earned many nicknames during his NBA career: “The Diesel,” “The Big Aristotle,” “The Big Daddy” and, since his move last year to the Phoenix Suns, “The Big Cactus.”

He might be getting a new one: “The Big Tweet.”

The New York Times reported on Thursday that O’Neal had opened an account on Twitter.com this week and begun sending out the 140-characters-or-less messages to more than 1,000 followers.

O’Neal’s Twitter messages may have come as a surprise to some users of the micro-blogging service because for the past several months an imposter has been “tweeting” in O’Neal’s name, the Times said.

It said the tweets from the fake “Shaq” were the creation of Ward Andrews, a 33-year-old Suns fan. His messages are archived at twitter.com/notShaqONeal.

O’Neal’s first message on Tuesday made it clear that the 7ft1in center of the Phoenix Suns and four-time NBA champion was now in charge.

“This is the real SHAQUILLE O’NEAL,” it said.

“There can only be one me,” the real O’Neal added in an interview with the Times.

Conductor drops out of concert for Prince Charles, EU

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Plans for Italian conductor Riccardo Muti to perform at Buckingham Palace on Thursday for Prince Charles’ 60th birthday party have collapsed. Muti had been expected to conduct the London-based Philharmonia Orchestra at the gala party hosted by Queen Elizabeth II the day before Charles, her eldest son, turns 60.

But orchestra spokeswoman Alice Walton said talks were held on the subject but plans were dropped due to logistical reasons. “Unfortunately, it was not possible to bring this idea to fruition due to logistical difficulties, but it is hoped that it may be possible for the Orchestra and Maestro Muti to pursue a future such opportunity together,” she said.

Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper reported that Muti canceled his performance because he was angry that he had been asked to shorten his program. Muti told Corriere della Sera, an Italian newspaper, that he dropped out because the program changed.

“The thing fell apart on its own. For ceremonial reasons that I don’t know, the program was shortened and it was decided that the orchestra would only play ‘God Save the Queen’ and another piece by a British musician,” Muti was quoted as saying.

“Originally, I agreed with pleasure to direct, I have excellent relations with the royal family. The queen has come to La Scala, she also gave me the honor of nominating me as Knight of the British Empire.

And then Charles cares a lot about the Philharmonia Orchestra, of which he is a patron. It’s just that the program was changed,” he was quoted as saying.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman would not comment on the matter except to say the party was a private event organized by the queen. No details about its guest list, menu, or performances have been released.

The Philharmonia Orchestra, which performs about 100 concerts in Britain each year, is now expected to perform a set of chamber music at the concert. Earlier this year, Muti was named music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and will join them for the 2010-2011 season.

Charles himself plans to host a birthday bash at his Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire on Saturday and so far there’s been no change in the entertainment there. Rod Stewart, who is active with The Prince’s Trust, a youth-oriented charity founded by Charles, is performing for free.

In addition to “Happy Birthday,” the aging rocker is expected to roll out a bevy of his hits, including “Maggie Mae,” ”Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “Hot Legs.”.

‘Heroes’ - Sameer Karnik pins hopes on patriotism now

Monday, October 20th, 2008

After two box office debacles - ‘Kyun! Ho Gaya Na…’ and ‘Nanhe Jaisalmer’ - director Sameer Karnik returns with ‘Heroes’. Releasing Friday, the multi-starrer is based loosely on the cult classic ‘The Motorcycles Diaries’.

While his directorial debut ‘Kyun! Ho Gaya Na…’ was an unconventional love story starring Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi, his second film ‘Nanhe Jaisalmer’ was about an unusual friendship between a film star and a Rajasthani boy. But both the films bombed. Now Karnic turns to patriotism to win over audiences.

The film has an army background, but Karnik says it is just symbolic and is basically about individuals.

‘The movie doesn’t focus on war like `Border’ or `LOC Kargil’,’ he was quoted as saying.

Karnik has co-written ‘Heroes’ with Aseem Arora. The film is about a road trip of two guys - Sohail Khan and Vatsal Seth.

‘They travel 1,000 miles to meet their destiny. The film shows that all of us have a hero inside us. It is only experience that makes us realise it,’ said Karnik.

The film revolves around Sammy (Sohail Khan) and Ali (Vatsal Seth), who are friends and do everything together. In short, they are highly dependent on each other for everything.

While Sammy is high-spirited and has a knack of finding humour in the weirdest of situations, Ali is quieter and more mature. When the two friends travel 1,000 miles to deliver three letters as a part of their film school assignment, little do they know that the journey will give them a new meaning of life.

Sammy and Ali travel via road from Delhi to Chandigarh and then from Manali to Ladakh. During their journey, they meet Balkar Singh (Salman Khan) and his wife Kuljeet Kaur (Preity Zinta).

A man of few words, Balkar has pledged his life for his country. Like most men, Balkar has beautiful dreams for his family, but he knows he might not be able to fulfil them.

His wife Kuljeet takes pride in being an army man’s wife and is happy that her son wants to walk the same path as his father. Kuljeet is a loving wife, a caring mother, a single daughter and the best daughter-in-law anyone could ask for. Sacrifice comes naturally to Kuljeet and so does hard work.

Then they meet the two brothers - Vikram (Sunny Deol) and Dhananjay Shergill (Bobby Deol).

Dhananjay is a charming and affectionate guy, but just like a child he is constantly trying to prove that he is better than his brother Vikram. Yet, when needed, that child takes a backseat to let the soldier in him take charge.

Th duo then meet Dr. Naqvi (Mithun Chakraborty), whose life is meaningless without his son Sahil (Dino Morea), an army man.

The chance meeting with these people have a life-changing impact on these two youngsters’ lives.

The film earlier titled ‘Mera Bharat Mahan’ will see Salman for the first time in a Sikh get-up. The actor grew his beard for three weeks before the filming to give an authentic Sikh look.

And Preity reportedly took a refresher course in acting from Anupam Kher’s acting school to brush up her skills for a deglamorised role of a timid wife.

The film has been shot in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

‘Car surfing’ killed 58 people, U.S.report says

Friday, October 17th, 2008

U.S. health officials warned young people on Thursday against “car surfing” in which a person rides on top of a moving vehicle, and said at least 58 people had died doing it since 1990.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report that injuries or deaths were reported in 31 states, mainly in the Midwest and the South of the United States. Head injuries killed 45 of the 58 victims.

“We strongly recommend that teens not engage in this type of behavior. It’s just too risky. It’s just too dangerous,” the CDC’s Dr. John Halpin said in a telephone interview.

Halpin said the origins of “car surfing” were not clear, but it has appeared in movies, for example in the 1985 film “Teen Wolf”.

People were killed when falling off cars driving at speeds ranging from 8 kph to 130 kph, the CDC said. Alcohol or drugs were involved in six of the deaths. Most of those hurt or killed were boys. Their average age was 17-1/2.

The CDC said the report was based on newspaper accounts of 58 deaths and 41 nonfatal accidents from 1990 through this year.

“Despite the potentially lethal consequences of this activity, car surfing shows no evidence of decreasing popularity,” the CDC report stated.
